Weather

Driving rain, mist and strong winds

Starting point : Loch and Daimh dam GR 510464

An attempt to complete the Carn Mairg and Carn Gorm quartet of Munros in Glen Lyon was abandoned because of stalking restrictions. As an alternative,  the two munros above Loch an Daimh were completed. This turned out to be quite a blessing since the weather turned very nasty. The hills above Loch an Daimh do not lodge deeply in the memory particularly as they were attempted in the miserable weather conditions. The ascent of both peaks was straightforward with no complications or problems encountered. However, it was not a good day for photographs.

After spending a number of years completing the North West and Far North Munros I returned to finish off the Carn Mairg  quartet of Munros in Glen Lyon.  As it was June there was no problem with the restricted access to the hills through the  estate. These four Munros lie betweet Glen Lyon and Rannoch and are not as high as their neighbours in the Lawers group. The fine views from two of the four summits were spoiled by mist but views from the last two summits were good and I particularly enjoyed the view of  Schiehallion, the first Munro I climbed when I was fourteen years old with all my family.

Weather

Mist at the start of day but clearing later

Starting point : Invervar GR 666483

Carn Gorm

The large metal gates at the entrance to the Estate were open this time and so I could make my way up the track towards the hills through the forest. After making a mistake and missing the bridge and path, I eventually started the climb up Carn Gorm.  The route is directly up on the crest until the first summit Carn Gorm was reached.

Meall Garbh

The route between all the peaks was very clear with a good path so even with the very limited visibilty it was not problem finding my way towards Meall Garbh.  Iron fence posts were followed from the summit of Carn Gorm to the climb up Meall Garbh. The summit cairn is made pretty much entirely of remains of the old iron fencing.

Carn Mairg

I was passed on the way towards Carn Mairg by David, who later it turned out had spent most of his life living on the Island of Eigg. The mist was clearing and eventually Schiehallion was visible. I had calculated that this summit was my 200th Munro and it was a great feeling to have got so far with the challenge of completing the Munros. David was also celebrating completing 100 Munros on the same peak.  The view from the summit was great.

Meall nan Aighean

The walk between the last two peaks was good, helped a very interesting conversation with David about the Islands and crofting on them. The weather improved considerably for the descent which was finished very quickly.
